What It’s like to be Stalked on an Island

I thought Kho Pha Ngan and Koh Samui were relatively big islands, until I had a stalker.

At the Full Moon Party, I met a guy from Syria, now living in Dubai. I blew him off the first time he spoke to me. Later that morning, I was sitting on a rock by myself watching the sea and trees and he found me again. I told him I was in deep thought and didn’t want to be bothered. He sat on the rock anyway. In hindsight, that was the moment when I should have gotten up and walked away.

He kept giving me generic compliments, but I was attempting to be nice to him anyway. It was hard. We spoke for ten minutes about work, life, etc. And then he asked me if I wanted to get a drink that night. I literally bursted out laughing saying it’s 11 am, I haven’t slept, I will be sleeping as soon as I get back to my hostel. I stupidly told him the name of the hostel I was working at on Koh Pha Ngan.

Instead I agreed to “possibly” get a drink with him back in Koh Samui the following day. Knowing well that this would never happen, I was just trying to politely exit the conversation. You understand how that goes.

Later that afternoon he showed up to my hostel on Kho Pha Ngan!! Luckily I was showering and a staffer knew the story and told him that I was busy. He asked another staffer which hostel I worked at in Koh Samui and our bartender told him the wrong one (thank you, friends).

Later that night we all get back to the island of Koh Samui, some people go out and some go to sleep.

It’s midnight in Koh Samui and HE SHOWS UP at my hostel. I don’t know how he found the correct one. Maybe he went to the hostel they told him I worked at, realizing it’s the wrong one, tried each hostel after that… who knows. It’s midnight, so as I told I would be, I was asleep. He asked a staffer to go wake me up and she refused, telling him to come back again tomorrow.

This morning, she told me that he showed up last night as I am finishing up my work. As I am freaking out knowing that he is going to come back again, HE WALKS IN. I think good, I just woke up, I’m all sweaty, no bra on, hair in messy bun, he will leave. NOPE. He asks to sit next to me and persists that I go get a drink with him because “I promised”. At this point, I am fed up with this situation and say, “You are coming off very pushy. I did not promise to get a drink with you, and even if I did promise, I am allowed to change my mind. I am very busy today and I think it’s best you leave.” He sat there staring for 30 seconds and finally got up and left.

As he walked out the door he says he will be back again this afternoon, I reply, “please don’t.”

This is why it’s easier to blow men off at the bar. Maybe this is what I get for just trying to be nice to someone. Well, I’m going to the beach now so if he comes back this afternoon I won’t be here, yay!

xx
